Words from the heart draft
Different cultures have different beliefs, different families have different languages, and different words are made, words that desribe things.Words that give a new meaning to things.
For example my family the Dureg family. My family used a word that was heard very often throughout many generations. We used the word "balong" or "basang" which in english means nephew or niece.
On a cool night at a house where there were tables with food laid out on two impossibly huge tables.I take my uncofortably rough paper plate.I then fill it with a mountain load of food where I take it back to my table where I'm greeted by my sister and parents.I take a bite of my food a tangy taste with shredded pieces of the perfectly orange carrots. I thought why is there a tangy taste in the pancit I then looked around the "food" table an i see a green circular shape when I realized it was calamunuci the exact taste that was in my pancit.
I then hear my name "Tyler can you get me water balong please?" I turn to a familiar face it was my aunty I was a little dumbfounded when she called me "balong" I did'nt know what to do but I did get here water anyway. When I gave a cold and wet bottle of water I went to my mom to immediatly to ask her on what "balong" had meant because I did'nt know what my aunty had said so I got really curious on what "balong had meant.I then get to my mom where she was talking with relitives that came here to visit. After she had seen me she asked "Yes Tyler,Do you need something balong?" I snapped to my senses because she had took a long time and had forgot that I was still standing in front of here like a little weirdo. So I went immediatly and said "Mom you know aunty Anna,"
My mom replied "Yes I do."
I then said "aunty anna called me balong and I don't know what that word means and do you know what that means? "
She replied "It means like nephew in english."
So I said "Oh thanks mom."

We then finished the night with saying our goodbyes to everyone at the party and went back to our lovely home.
I went to get some answers from my mom. I then asked her a couple of questions which would better educate me on my family history. I asked her first the language that her parents used often with her. She answered "They usually used illicano because our family orginally came from the philippines."This made me feel a little closer to my family heritage because she sometimes uses illicano in her own house. That showed me that she has used the things that her parents did with her and she still uses it with my sister and I. After I knew that she still speaks illicano.
I aksed her another question on a special word that we used with on what word we use in the family and she had said the same thing. When I asked on why is that word important? So I asked "Why are these word so important to our family? "She had replied "We had used from since you were a child and when I was a child it meant a way of still showing our filipino backround."This reminded me because my parents had used this word and my mom's parents had used these words while she had heard them from her parents. This gives me more of a chance to better connect with my filipino heritage.
In conclusion my family word is balong or basang. This had showed me on where I had first encountered balong or basang. Also where my mom had first encountered her memory of balong or basang.

MS(3-) Nice choice on word. My suggestion would be start with the story you don't really need to discuss the cultures around the world because it is an essay directly about you. Also you don't need to actually state that you asked your mom questions, just work her answers directly into the essay. For example, "My mom told me that we use that word because it comes from the Illicano language." This goes for the remainder of your essay, work her answers into your essay without saying that you asked her questions.
ReplyDeleteYou had a lot of descriptive words and your "word" was good. I think that you should've started with your story first. Also you don't need to narrate everything that your mom says. Instead of saying "my family the dureg family" you should say " my dureg family" or "the dureg family", and check your grammar (didn't)
